Opal Fields

Day 6 Friday

Breakfast.

Left Lighning Ridge about 9 and travelled to Cumborah.

Lots of flat scrub and sheep dotted over the place. Saw a mother and baby by the road with an eagle circling. Also saw a mother goat and twin babies.

Big bird sculpture just outside of Lighning Ridge made from old VW parts and various other metal pieces of scrap.

Detour to Glengarry and Grawin opal fields. I was surprised at the number of workings still active here. It would seem there are still plenty of people who think they will be the ones to strike it rich.

Visited the Pub in the Scrub and Glengarry pub.

Took the wrong route out but ended up being a short cut. Pulled over later on for lunch on the tailgate and waved at everyone as they passed. Felt quite superior. Weather remains beautiful. Short sleeves more than enough.

Continued on through the barren plains and camped overnight at Carinda.

The meal was provided by the school P&C they had a turn out of at least 10 workers for a one teacher school of 20 kids. The school our kids went to had a population of 800 kids but was lucky to get six to a meeting, says something about the sense of community in the country.
